Stratatak — Full Rules & FAQ
Welcome to the full rules page for Stratatak. If you're here from the Quick Instructions card, you're in the right place. This page covers setup, legal plays, how battles work, edge cases, and answers to the most common questions new players have.
Setup
- Shuffle all cards together into one deck.
- Deal 7 cards to each player.
- Place the remaining cards face-down in the center as the draw pile.
- The older player is the first Attacker.
Legal Plays
On your turn, you must play one of the following:
- Single — Any one card played face-up.
- Run — Two or more cards with consecutive Fighter counts, all of the same color. (e.g., a Green 1 and a Green 2)
- Set — Two or more cards with the same Fighter count, either all the same color or all different colors.
Star Cards
A Star card counts as 0 Fighters and can be played as:
- A Single on its own.
- Part of a Run or Set to complete it.
Note: Because a Star card counts as 0 Fighters, it cannot raise your Fighter total — but it can help you get cards out of your hand.
How a Battle Works
- The Attacker plays any legal play face-up.
- The Defender responds with any legal play face-up.
- Count the total Fighter icons on each side. The higher total wins the battle.
- If Fighter totals are tied — STRATACLASH! (see below).
Strataclash — Tiebreaker Rules
When both plays have the same number of Fighters, compare the color composition of each play:
- Mixed Colors vs Mixed Colors → Defender wins.
- Single Color vs Same Single Color → Defender wins.
- Mixed Colors vs Single Color → Single Color wins.
-
Single Color vs Different Single Color → Color hierarchy decides:
- 🔵 Blue beats 🔴 Red
- 🔴 Red beats 🟢 Green
- 🟢 Green beats 🔵 Blue
After Each Battle
- Discard all cards played in the battle face-up into a discard pile.
- The winner becomes the new Defender and does not draw cards.
- The loser becomes the new Attacker, draws back up to 7 cards, then immediately attacks to start the next battle.
Winning the Game
The first player to empty their hand on a winning battle wins the game.
Important: You must WIN the battle with your last card(s). Playing your last card and losing does not win you the game — you draw back up to 7 and attack again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play a Star card as part of a Run or Set even if I don't need it?
Yes — as long as the play is still legal without it, you can include a Star card to get it out of your hand. Just remember it adds 0 Fighters to your total.
Does the draw pile ever run out?
If the draw pile runs out, shuffle the discard pile to form a new draw pile.
What if I have fewer than 7 cards when I need to draw?
Draw as many as available. If the draw pile is empty and there are no discards to reshuffle, play continues with whatever cards remain in hand.
Can the Defender play any legal play, or must it match the Attacker's play type?
The Defender can respond with any legal play — a Single, Run, or Set — regardless of what the Attacker played. There is no requirement to match the type or number of cards.
In a Strataclash, what counts as "mixed colors"?
A play is mixed colors if the cards in it include more than one color. A play is single color if every card (excluding Star cards, which are colorless) is the same color.
What color is a Star card in a Strataclash?
Star cards have no color for Strataclash purposes. A play containing only a Star card is considered a Single with 0 Fighters — if it ties, it is treated as having no color (mixed, for Strataclash comparison).
Can I pass or choose not to play?
No. Both the Attacker and the Defender must make a legal play each battle.
What happens if I can't make a legal play?
This should not occur in normal gameplay since any single card is always a legal play as a Single.
